From 1997 to 2003, various tests were carried out in Germany with thoroughbred horses (pregnant mares, mares with foals, young animals and convalescent horses) using a variety of bedding materials.
Practical testing was carried out on all commercially available products including wood shavings, normal straw, pelleted straw, rice husks, hemp and paper pulp.
Miscanthus pellets proved to be the best solution across all relevant criteria such as labour required, amount of bedding used and to be disposed of, ammonia formation, storage costs and price / performance ratio.
